Menashe Amir, born in Tehran in 1939, built and led the Persian service of Israel Radio, opening each broadcast with the words “Here in Jerusalem, this is the Voice of Israel.” For close to six decades millions of Iranians tuned in — often taping his broadcasts in secret and passing them hand to hand — making him the most trusted Israeli voice inside Iran. He remains a Persian-language commentator who insists that Israel's quarrel is with the regime, never with the Iranian people.

By 2003 experts estimated that up to five million Iranians were listening to Amir's daily Persian broadcast from Jerusalem, taping and sharing it despite the regime's jamming and its denunciations of the “Zionist radio.”
