Rita Yahan-Farouz — known across Israel simply as Rita — was born in Tehran in 1962 to a Persian-Jewish family and became one of the country's best-loved pop singers. When she recorded an album in her native Persian, Iranians at home and abroad embraced her, and she came to be called a cultural ambassador between the two peoples. In 2013 she carried that role to the United Nations, singing in Hebrew, English and Persian for peace.
